Last December we made our way to Salt Lake City, Utah to search for some powder with Spencer Schubert. We got extra lucky because his mom joined in on the fun as well. The vibes were strong right away.
[Spencer] Mom, how do you feel about Stance?
[Deb] So good, honey. I have a Stance in the morning, and then I have a Stance in the afternoon, and then right before I go to bed, I got my Stance on my toes.
[Spencer] What's your day rate, mom?
[Deb] Oh, it's ummm…one sock.
[Spencer] That's too cheap.
Has snowboarding always been a part of Spencer’s life?
[Deb] Definitely. Sometimes we would leave Spenny and go ride because it was a powder day or whatever. My brother never let’s me live down the time I left out early in the morning to go ride but forgot to mention to Spencer that my brother would be there when he woke up. So Spenny got up and was like, "Mom, dad?" But he figured it out and just went downstairs. When my brother came down, Spenny was up on the counter just getting a bowl of cereal by himself.
[Spencer] Self-sufficient.
When did it all start for you?
[Spencer] I mean, I grew up on all of these things. The reason I got into it was through the snowboarding videos and influence that my brother and his friends had, and that was just the coolest thing as a kid to see. I realized pretty early on that everything: the people I hang out with, the clothes I wear, and the music I listen to, everything's been influenced from these videos. And all I wanted to do was emulate those videos.
What was it about those videos that got you hooked?
[Spencer] I just wanted to try to recreate that feeling I got from watching the videos, and now I'm addicted to the process and to the lifestyle of it. Addicted to going and finding the new spot or going out into the back country. You feel a sense of community when you're with your friends and when you're trying to make something. And when you get a trick or you put out a video, that feeling, it's rewarding in that sense.
I’m addicted to the process and lifestyle of it.
SPENCER SCHUBERT
You’re originally from Oregon right? When did you come to Salt Lake and why?
[Spencer] I got kicked out of high school the day I turned 18 and then I left to Salt Lake the next day. Salt Lake's just the snowboard mecca. Really centralized with the resorts being 30 minutes away and the city gets snow as well, and so many people post up here for the winter, call it home. So yeah, I just came to Salt lake and stayed with friends and then been here ever since.
So it’s safe to say snowboarding is a HUGE part of your life?
[Spencer] Oh absolutely. The biggest part. Sometimes I don’t even realize how big but then things happen like a few years ago I was in an Uber with a buddy of mine who was filming for a different snowboard project. We were just talking about tricks and nonsense like, “Yeah. Since I’m goofy, I'll just do a grab if you're over here, and then I could do a front three later then a gap lip slide, maybe a back lip.” When we got out of the Uber the driver turns around, and says, “I know you're speaking English, but I didn't understand a word you guys just said.”
What do you like about Stance socks?
You have to be comfortable out there. I haven't been nice to my feet. I am not in a profession that is nice. It's just jammed into these bear traps and then out in the cold for 12 plus hours. So having something nice is key. Iit was a game-changer going from non-stance, before times. They call it BS. Before Stance. And now it's AD, which is After Dopeness.
